How Konmari Changed My Life

I used to be afraid to open my closets.

I used to spend weekends at home organizing instead of going on walks in nature.

I used to misplace clothing, spend 20 minutes searching for it and arrive late to appointments.

If you came over to my house you may not think it was cluttered. I was not a messy person.

But I had a lot of stuff. Too much stuff. It was weighing me down. My home never felt done. Never felt complete.

If you came over to visit you’d see that countertops were mostly clear, kitchen cabinets weren't overstuffed, maybe there was a pile of clean laundry here or there. Oh and of course everybody has a junk drawer. You probably wouldn’t think much of it.

But I felt disorganized. I felt overwhelmed. I felt like I was wasting time digging through piles of clothing and clothes in drawers and never being able to find the right garment. I felt like nothing that i ever tried to do to get my home organized once and for all had worked. I felt like a failure.

The real worth of your home isn’t about what items you keep inside  it. It isn’t even about those items being beautifully selected and arranged.

The value of your home is in how those items make you feel.

Ask yourself:

  • When you walk through your front door, do you feel calm and welcomed?

  • When you get dressed for the day, do you feel confident?

  • When you have a huge project to tackle, do you feel empowered?

  • When you do simple everyday tasks, like reaching for scissors or hanging a picture, are you at ease knowing exactly where the items you need will be located?

  • When you finish your work for the day, do you feel relaxed in a space that surrounds you with joy?

These feelings are not an unattainable description of perfection or a fantasy dreamworld. In fact, I say yes to every single question there. My home serves and supports me, and instead of focusing on IT, I focus on doing the activities that bring happiness, contentment and deep meaning to my life. My home has transformed from something that I was serving - constantly re-organizing messy closets or staying home on weekends to “get the house back in order” - to something that serves ME.

Now, I have a daily meditation practice, a healthy morning routine, a flexible working schedule, and most importantly, more quality time with friends and family.

Let me share a secret with you. This may sound impossible, but every single person can achieve it. You can have an organized home that supports your ideal lifestyle. You can clear physical and emotional space to start doing the things you’ve always wanted to do.

If you follow the process, you will learn the skills to do this. You will practice those skills until you are a master of them. If you are able to have a consultant alongside you, you will have access to their deep knowledge and intimate experience with the process, as well as limitless personal support.

You can do this. Everyone I’ve guided on this journey has been successful. All of them have said that, ever though it can be challenging, it is fun, cathartic, and life changing.

Schedule a time to talk to me about starting this.

I’ll tell you one more secret…. I no longer stay home on the weekends to organize my house. You can find me breathing in the fresh air in Austin, Texas - at the farmer’s market, on the hike and bike trails, or in an impromptu yoga sesh in my cozy backyard.
